Safety Commission, 68% of all playground injuries are caused
by falls to the ground. Proper installation of Safety Down Under®
playground safety surfacing is of the utmost importance. Installed
properly Safety Down Under can reduce the risk of serious injury
due to falls. Some factors that contribute to poor playground
safety surfacing installation including insufficient thickness
of safety surfacing, missing or inadequate use zones, not meeting
ASTM standards and failure to follow playground equipment manufacturer’s
instructions.
Safety Down Under recommends that before installation
of playground safety surfacing, the customer consult with the manufacturer
of their playground equipment for the proper dimensions of use zones
and the proper depth required for playground safety surfacing. Use
zones are the room needed around swings, slides and other equipment
where a child might fall. Safety Down Under meets ASTM F-1292-99
for a 12’ fall. In tests, 12” of Safety Down Under was
installed over a layer of geotextile fabric and 2” drain rock.
The 12” layer was wetted and compacted using a vibrating plate
compactor to a final depth of 9”.**
